Serum, like plasma, is the liquid part of blood containing water, salts, lipids, hormones, and proteins (including albumin and immunoglobulins). However, unlike plasma, serum does not contain clotting factors and fibrinogen, as they have been removed after coagulation. Human serum is especially useful for cell culture, preventing animal-derived immunogenic effects when substituted for animal serum, drug testing, therapeutic immunoassays, in vitro diagnostics, and more.
Primary human serum has been isolated from peripheral blood (PB) using centrifugation after coagulation and clot-removal.
Serum was obtained from a single donor using Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved consent forms and protocols.
